Duplex treatments

duplex1

Why duplex coatings?

The term "duplex" describes the combination of two layers that, so to say, "share the work" amongst themselves. The organic topcoat has a high mechanical toughness and ensures your components look good. If the topcoat nevertheless becomes damaged, the usual good cathodic corrosion protection is still provided by the electroplated undercoat, thus preventing subsurface corrosion of the topcoat.

We offer our duplex treatments in combination with liquid paint systems and environmentally friendly powder coatings (no solvents).

The advantages of duplex coatings:

  • Functional and decorative
  • Very good looks, even after extended use
  • Up to 1000 hours against base metal corrosion in the salt spray test according to DIN 50021 SS
  • Malleable after the coating is applied without the coating being damaged (bending, swaging, pressing, flanging)
  • Thermally resistant up to 180 °C, e.g. in the engine compartment
  • Partial covering of, for instance, connections and screw threads – thanks to the electroplated layer, they are protected against corrosion all the same

Which coating combination?

Whilst coatings of sealer with thicknesses of approx. 0.5-5 µm are normally applied wet-on-wet directly during the electroplating process, the duplex treatments, on the other hand, require two different process steps. A paint coating is applied to the cathodic corrosion protection (zinc, ZnFe or ZnNi), either as liquid paint, as a powder coating or as electrophoretic paint (KTL). If the workpieces are to be shaped later on, a suitable adhesion promoter is essential.

The topcoat is applied electrostatically in coating lines. In the case of smaller parts, it is applied using the spin-coating technique or in centrifuges.
